Colours and additives for asphalt
Asphalt need not be black and dull. Asphalt is, in fact, a very suitable product for colouring; and, at the same time, dyed asphalt is durable, flexible and relatively cheap to make.
There can be many good reasons for colouring asphalt. Dyed asphalt can be used as a means to promote road safety, for instance by indicating the separation between walking/cycling areas and roadways. Or it can be used in school yards where there is a desire to assign different colours to different areas and play spaces.
Or it can be used as purely decorative surfacing of pedestrian streets or market squares and open spaces where the surfacing is intended as an element in an architectural integral whole within the street environment.
